On Tuesday morning residents of the world's most polluted city were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that was classified as the "severe" range.

Alarming Pollution Readings

Several parts of the city registered an AQI over 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold recommended by the World Health Organization.

In some locations, readings of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, representing fifteen to twenty times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and Current Changes

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the deadly smog that engulfs the city as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the newly elected regional government petitioned the highest court to request a easing of the ban.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been questioned by environmental experts as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "cultural practices and ecological concerns".

Legal Ruling and Reality

To the disappointment of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited periods throughout the festival.

During the celebrations, there was widespread disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.

Many air quality sensors throughout the city showed air quality spiking around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.

International Effects

Extensive ignition of firecrackers during the celebrations also sparked a blame game with neighbouring the neighboring country, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from India following the celebrations.

Chronic Environmental Issue

Alarmingly severe concentrations of air contamination in the capital have continued as a significant problem for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particles in the air has been documented to increase dramatically to 70% higher the worst records ever documented in Beijing, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted urban center.

Multiple Contamination Contributors

This crisis in the capital is resulting from a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, garbage fires and pollutants from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers illegally burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Medical and Financial Consequences

The economic and health impact on the approximately 33 million residents calling home the capital region is enormous, according to multiple investigations.

This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

The pollution is calculated to be responsible for approximately 10k early fatalities per year in the capital.
