Right-leaning responses to the partial release of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the previous administration pointing out the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how extensive censorship cast former President Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable manner.
Justice Department Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive legal issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter describing the redaction process.
Questions Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's identity and image are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. Some Republicans immediately demanded increased openness.
“People are raging and walking away,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a subsequent legislature may move to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Unfortunately, this file dump egregiously fails to adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he added.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Disclosure
However, some rightwing commentators and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains hundreds of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals depicted in photographs have their identities blacked out.
But some do not, featuring high-profile figures like Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, enabled certain rightwing voices to go on the attack.
“This is quite rich how the political left wrongly claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“New documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a jacuzzi with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has consistently stated he knew of zero criminal actions by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.
“The release is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Muted
However, overall comment on the right was comparatively subdued after the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' publication.
Loomer, who not long ago accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing influencers were provided hard-copy binders of materials that included no new information.
