A man who laced candy with sleeping medication and gave them to minors at a youth camp in the area has pleaded guilty to sexual crimes against two young males aged nine and 10.
The defendant was taken into custody after eight youngsters and a grown-up fell ill at the location in the summer month.
The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he stood at the courthouse on Friday.
Nevertheless, he disputed a single sexual charge he was charged with, which was concerning a nine-year-old child.
The accused was remanded in custody prior to a further hearing on November 28th.
'Candy game'
The prosecutor, presenting evidence, described the criminal behavior to the legal proceedings.
She explained his those affected were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer camp which he operated.
The defendant engaged in a "candy game" with the children, Mrs Prior explained, in which he would go into the sleeping quarters when they were settling down and tell them to eat sweets "as quickly as they can".
She informed the proceedings the defendant had conducted this practice with the children "repeatedly", and minors had previously fallen ill the next day.
She explained the man had been able to explain this for many years as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his family member had worries in summer 2025.
The legal representative stated further: "Recently" his family member had worries about what was going on, justifiably.
"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."
The prosecutor said items including infant oil, petroleum jelly and injection devices were located, and his family member alerted the police about his concerns.
She said the defendant continued to engage in the "treat game" with six children that time - July 26th - and they were all ill the following morning.
"Authorities" had not gone out by that stage," she continued.
The regulatory agency, the investigative body, previously told that it was investigating the police response of the situation.
Mrs Prior stated the children were struggling to walk due to their condition, so Ruben's stepson notified the law enforcement a second time.
She explained the man then engaged in the "sweet game" in a area of five minors.
