Former world champion Kramnik Rejects Wrongdoing in Passing of American Grandmaster Daniel Naroditsky

The former world champion has broken his silence after the tragic passing of US chess star Daniel Naroditsky, calling the 29-year-old's loss as a heartbreaking event while accusing critics for mounting what he termed an "deeply cynical and unlawful campaign of harassment" against him and his family.

Former Champion's Response

The fifty-year-old former world champion, who has faced widespread condemnation for alleging Naroditsky of digital foul play without evidence, expressed condolences but rejected any personal attacks.

"Despite the tensions, I was the only person in the chess community who, noticing on video Daniel's obvious health issues a day before his death, openly urged for him to receive help," Kramnik declared. "The subsequent attempts, immediately following his passing, to explicitly connect this sorrowful incident to my name … cross all boundaries of basic human morality."

Kramnik asserted his earlier calls for a review of Naroditsky's online play had been overlooked "even with substantial proof", and stated he would provide material to "appropriate officials". He mentioned his lawyers were drafting legal actions over "unfounded claims" that have led to threats against him and his family.

Police Findings

The death of Naroditsky may have been the consequence of substance overuse and is being investigated as a possible suicide, based on a law enforcement document issued last Thursday. A statement from Charlotte authorities says Naroditsky was found dead Sunday evening and describes the case as a "Death/suicide/overdose/Sudden/Natural Death Investigation."

"On Sunday October 19th at approximately 07:11pm, officers answered an emergency medical request in the area of 9000 Colin Crossing," the document states. "Upon arrival, an unconscious individual was found and later declared dead by a medic."

Community Reaction

Anger over Kramnik's behavior has dominated the chess world. Grandmaster Nakamura described his actions "disgusting", while five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen described it as "horrible". GM from India Sarin, who faced Naroditsky in his last digital game, blamed Kramnik for "causing a death", saying his self-appointed pursuit against suspected cheaters was ineffective and "completely unacceptable".

Naroditsky's Legacy

A Stanford-educated prodigy and former world youth champion, Naroditsky gathered more than 800k fans on Twitch and YouTube. Known as Danya, he was praised for his humor, clarity and humility, becoming a leading voice in chess's pandemic-era boom. He was also among the globe's top competitors under shorter time controls, finishing ninth at last year's blitz world championship in New York.

Naroditsky repeatedly refuted the allegations but admitted the impact they had taken on his psychological well-being. "Ever since the Kramnik stuff, I feel like if I begin performing strongly, people assume the worst," Naroditsky remarked in his final livestream.

Official Responses

The International Chess Federation (Fide) said this week it was "investigating" Kramnik's actions. "Kramnik's methodology simply is unacceptable," Fide CEO Sutovsky stated. The federation plans to honor Naroditsky with a memorial award.

Fide president Dvorkovich later confirmed that all of Kramnik's official remarks about Naroditsky, prior to and following his passing, would be submitted to the organisation's Ethics and Disciplinary Commission "to be reviewed independently".

"Life and human worth are fundamental values shared by all of us," Dvorkovich stressed. "Our global chess family has always valued the achievements of GM Vladimir Kramnik, but such stature brings a responsibility to maintain the standards of equity and consideration."

Family's Hope

Naroditsky's relatives have said they wish he is remembered not for the hostility he endured but for "the joy and inspiration he provided others every day". Magnus Carlsen called him "a resource to the chess community", while Nakamura referred to him as "among the finest".
