Crawley Claims Ignorance of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered those words in several interviews in the wake of his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435.

Consequently, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They were the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
